Multi-disciplinary London based artist Jack Thomson will be leading his dance photography workshop in San Juan, Puerto Rico as part of CONTEMPORA 2024.

This dance photography workshop is aimed at photographers who want to develop their relationship with dance and movement, and how to work with choreography for camera. It is also for dancers who have a vested interest in photography and wish to harness their dance knowledge to deepen their photographic practice. (Limited to 10 photographers).

Within the 2 day workshop participants will be exploring the intersection between dance and photography, focusing on composition, form and the language of movement. We will also be covering...

  • Perspectives and approaches on capturing movement in a still form.
  • Tools to keep dancers/subjects inspired by offering stimulus to provoke their physicality.
  • Dance photography as a collaborative act.
  • Building a common collaborative language between visual arts and movement.
  • Tapping into your own physicality in order to achieve your desired image.
  • The body and space/architecture.

Photographers will be collaborating closely with four world class professional dancers throughout the day, in the morning classical ballet dancers and in afternoon two contemporary dancers.

On Sunday July 7th, all 10 participants will be invited to join a 4 hour collective digital editing & experimenting session, where they will have to opportunity learn from each-other and to share images taken over the workshop weekend. The final hour will finish with a lecture on the history of dance photography, (Supported by the Abderrahim Crickmay Charitable Settlement)

About Jack

Jack formally trained as a dancer at the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance and is still performing as a professional dancer today. In works by Alexander Whitley, Ohad Narhrin, Justin Peck, Itzik Galili, Blanca Li, Kate Flatt, Richard Chappell, Willi Dorner, Shobana Jeyasingh, Caroline Finn, Wayne McGregor, Maxine Doyle to name a few.

He also self studied photography since aged 11 and over the years has linked his knowledge with dance and photography to established his dance photography practice.

He has photographed for The Royal Ballet, Sadlers Wells, Sydney Dance Company, Studio Wayne McGregor, English National Ballet, The Rambert School and many more arts organisations in the UK and Europe. 

In addition he has been commissioned by Random Acts (Channel 4) and New Creatives (BBC arts) to direct and choreography dance for camera, with these films been screened globally.
